Kolli Hills : Amidst Pure Nature Kolli Hills is a small mountain range located in the Namakkal district of the state of Tamil Nadu. The elevation of the mountains range from 500 m the tallest mountains reaching up to an elevation of 1190 m. Kolli Mallai as Kolli Hills is known in the local language means ‘mountains of death’. The legend says that Kolli Hills is protected by ‘Ettukai Amman’ or ‘Kollipavai’ who chased away demons with her alluring smile. Kolli Hills covers an area of about 280 km². Located in the Eastern Ghats, Kolli Hills remains unscathed by commercial tourism, is less polluted and still retains the natural beauty.To reach Kolli Hills you have to manoeuvre about 70 hair pin bends cutting through lush green mountain sides which are dotted with waterfalls.The Kolli Hills is also featured in several Tamil classics. The region was ruled by Valvil Ori around 200 AD, who is praised as one of the seven great philanthropists of ancient Tamil Nadu. His valour, marksmanship and exploits are part of folklore. He is supposed to have killed a lion, a bear, a deer and a boar with a single arrow. Semmedu village in Kolli Hills is famous for the Arappalishwarar Temple. This temple was built by Valvil Ori in the 2nd century. According to legend, a shiva linga was found when a farmer was ploughing his land and started to bleed when he accidentally hit the shiva linga with a plough. This small wound is visible on the shiva linga. Agaya Gangai is a waterfall situated near the Arappaliswarar temple. Kolli Hills are covered with evergreen forests, and a lot of farm products like coffee, tea, rice, millet, jackfruit, pineapple, black pepper and other spices have also been grown.Kolli Hills is also famous for the magnificent views one can get from the top. Two viewpoints, Seekuparai and Selurnadu, have been developed by the tourism department to encourage tourism. The government even holds a tourism festival in August and attracts a lot of nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts. A trekking trail which used to be a one horse track used by the British connecting Semmedu to Chinna Pallamparai is frequented by hard core trekkers. Other adventure sports that can be tried are rock climbing, rappelling and spelunking (caving exploration). The other temples in Kolli Hills are the Ettukai Amman Temple and Masi Periyasamy Temple.The climate in Kolli Hills is very pleasant and can be visited all throughout the year. During monsoons the road can get a bit slippery due to the overflowing waterfalls.A recently developed botanical garden, boat house and cave house are popular tourist spots.There are a lot of options for accommodation; quite a few resorts have come up in and around Kolli Hills.
